SystemRescueCD to the rescue

Posted in Computers, General on April 3, 2009 by ubducted

Whenever I have computer problems, I’ll often need SystemRescueCD to help me fix it.

SystemRescueCd is a Linux system on a bootable CD-ROM for repairing your system and recovering your data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It contains a lot of system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, …) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools).

To use SystemRescueCD, boot from the disc and at the prompt type

startx

and hit enter.  Then right click to get the menu to the tools.

Blogging on Linux

Posted in General on December 1, 2008 by ubducted

I’ve been mildly blogging on Linux and anything open source related for quite some time, particularly on Ubuntu Linux, my favourite alternative to Microsoft Windows.

I called the blog “Ubducted” – An Ubuntu Linux Abduction, because, quite literally, Ubuntu swept me away from the world of Microsoft Windows.

The blog was also hosted on Squarespace, and although I love Linux, I found I didn’t blog on it as much as I anticipated.  So I decided to move the blog entries to a new Journal on JaredPrins.com which is also hosted on Squarespace.

However, having some webspace available, I have a wordpress blog setup on Ubducted.com.  It will take in my Linux RSS feed on JaredPrins.com, and possibly other Linux feeds.

I really like the Squarespace platform and prefer to do all my blogging in one spot, through one account, rather than have to login into multiple accounts.  Otherwise, it would make more sense to make my Linux posts on the WordPress installation.

For now, I like this setup.
